Historically perfect Hudson Harbor site, located in Jackson.
When New Orleans fell to the Union in late April 1862, maintaining Confederate control of the Mississippi River became a major priority. The South needed to protect other strategic points, and the heights near Port Hudson were a perfect site. But Port Hudson fell on July 9, 1963, after 48 days of siege. It was the longest siege of the Civil War and the first time black regiments participated in the fighting.
