MURBACH ABBEY
8th-century abbey offering a lovely setting for a hike at its foot and a beautiful view during a visit to the Baroque chapel
Founded in the 8th century, Murbach Abbey was one of the richest abbeys in the Holy Roman Empire, with possessions in over 350 places, including Lucerne. Of the 12th-century Romanesque abbey church, only the choir and transept remain, testifying to its prestige. At the foot of the Grand Ballon, it offers an ideal setting for hiking. The view from the baroque Notre-Dame-de-Lorette chapel is breathtaking. Listed as a historic monument since 1841, the chapel's architecture and peaceful atmosphere make it a delight to visit.
