Carson National Forest is one of five national forests in New Mexico, offering many hiking opportunities. To preserve its richness, the park consists of five wilderness areas: Chama River Canyon Wilderness, Columbine-Hondo Wilderness, Cruces Basin Wilderness, Latir Peak Wilderness, Pecos Wilderness and Wheeler Peak Wilderness. All of these preserves highlight the mountain, forest and canyon environments of the region. It may take you more than an hour to drive from one area to the next. Wheeler Peak is the highest peak in the state at 4,013 meters.
