The area around Jos offers a multitude of hiking opportunities, and the Plateau, with its pleasant climate and unspoilt nature, is an ideal setting for walking enthusiasts. Shere Hills is undoubtedly one of the most popular sites: at 1,776 m, it is the highest point on the Plateau and the third highest peak in Nigeria. The landscape here is extremely varied: hills, bush, plains and rock formations provide a spectacular backdrop. Beyond their natural appeal, these hills have a strong cultural and spiritual dimension for the local peoples, notably the Berom and Anaguta, who consider them sacred and ancestral places, sheltering spirits and protective forces. Some caves and peaks were used as ritual sites to ask for protection, prosperity or fertility, and these traditions continue to influence local festivals and practices.

Jos has a small community of hikers who regularly organize nature outings, and it's a real privilege to be able to join them. Never attempt the climb alone, as the trails are unmarked, it's easy to get lost and there is a safety risk.
