Barton Creek Cave, a Maya burial and ceremonial space with 28 human skeletons and some Maya pottery remains
Barton Creek Cave is a Mayan burial and ceremonial space used during the first millennium AD. 28 human skeletons have been found here, as well as pottery bearing witness to the passage of the Maya, some of whose remains you can still see. It usually takes just over an hour to discover the entire site by canoe, following your guide. Be prepared to keep your head down as you pass through chambers full of stalactites and stalagmites, which you must avoid. A change of scenery guaranteed!
