The towers are the remains of the old episcopal castle which was used as a prison for some women and which gave access to the city.
These two towers are the remains of the former episcopal castle. The Devil's Tower, built into the surrounding wall after the destruction of the castle, is the symbol of a relentless witch hunt. It served as a prison for women accused of practicing witchcraft. The tower of Nessel was a tower that gave access to the city. Built probably during the sixteenth century, it was transformed into a prison and then sold to a bourgeois of Mulhouse in 1803.
