Nestled in a bend of the Kobuk River, the village of the same name is the smallest in the Northwest region. It was originally established to provide food for the miners in the Cosmos Hills. It still lives from hunting and fishing today and Kobuk has a slight population rebound after decades of decline, with about 190 inhabitants in 2020 compared to 150 in 2010! People live here in the traditional way. At the edge of the river, women dry salmon on the line or smoke it under a kind of tent. Fishing enthusiasts like to spend a few days here, camping by the river and eating their fresh fish in the evening.
