In the extreme north of Alaska, Kaktovik has always been inhabited by the Inupiat Eskimos. Known for its whaling tradition, the village is the stronghold of dozens of polar bears that invite themselves to the feast every year. The villagers, who are allowed to take three bowhead whales a year to support themselves, have the habit of depositing the remains of the hunt a few kilometers from the village, in an area called the bone pile. The polar bears love it, it is a real protein supplement for them while waiting for the ice pack to form again, so that they can hunt seals, their main food.
