Royal Gorge is a canyon of the Arkansas River. It is located about 3 km west of the city of Cañon City and extends northwestern for almost 10 kilometers. It is one of the deepest canyons in Colorado and its low gage allowed the construction of a bridge in 1929. With a height of 291 meters, the Royal Gorge Bridge is the highest suspension bridge in the United States and has been the highest in the world for a long time. Its small width allows traffic only in a sense, now reserved for the park's service vehicles. If you are in the region, don't miss this architectural feat and its breathtaking panorama on the river Arkansas River, which runs across the narrow canyon walls. Plan to take the bridge on foot to the other shore and its various infrastructures and, if you don't have the vertith, several facilities will allow you to cross, slip or swing over the deep gulf.
