Called the «Red Sea» by the inhabitants of the region, Laguna Roja was still an unknown place in 2009. Here, legends tell you that the land was inhabited by the devil. In spite of its growing appeal, many surrounding communities fear that water body: It would give him supernatural qualities and mysterious disappearances… Some even say that thousands of Aymaras died by drinking his waters. Located at 3,700 m, its depth is still unknown and its warm waters reach 50 ° C. Theories around its color are numerous, but scientific theory explains that this striking color is caused by a microscopic alga that adapts to the conditions of the place. To get there, many agencies from Arica (and even Iquique) organize circuits, often over several days. The Laguna Roja belongs to the commune of Camarones, by which you can pass before visiting this extraordinary place. The alternative is also to pass through Camiña city, located 147 kilometers from Iquique. Public transport does not go there.
