Ellis County Courthouse is the city's most iconic building with its striking Romanesque Revival architecture.
Built in 1897, the Ellis County Courthouse is the city's most iconic building with its Romanesque Revival architecture of limestone and pink granite designed by James Riely Gordon. From its openwork base with numerous windows and round arches rises a central tower adorned with clocks on its four sides. Numerous figures by Harry Herley and his team of German artists decorate the capitals. Rumors say that the love between the stonemason and a local girl was the subject of these decorations.
