A quiet little town in the heart of the Black Hills, Custer boasts of having the largest main street in the country, thought at the time, that a chariot fired by a herd of cattle can easily turn around. It would be the oldest in the region and it is mainly known historically because gold was found there. A few kilometers from there, General George Armstrong Custer (from whom the city was appointed) and his cavalry will make a discovery - gold! - which will indirectly lead to the sad battle of Little Bighorn. As a reminder, the 1868 Laramie Treaty granted Lakotas the possession of the Black Hills, but with the discovery of gold in the region, settlers arrived in mass, flouting the agreement in question. After an attempt by the government to buy the Indian reserve for a bite of bread, the Amerindians and the army finally went to war. In 1875, Custer took shape when a group of miners, led by Thomas Hooper, drew the 1.6 km 2 that will compose the city. A few months later, almost 10,000 people are attracted to the gold rush, but who are going to abandon the city as quickly as they took off when gold is mined in Deadwood, a hundred kilometers north.Today, if the small center bordered by some historic buildings and restaurants does not really interest it, it is the ideal location of Custer that makes it a popular tourist destination. From there you can explore the Custer State Park and the Crazy Horse Memorial; about thirty minutes from the northeast, Mount Rushmore is waiting for you and almost at the same distance south, Wind Cave National Park.
