Between Big Bear Lake and Palm Springs, Pioneertown is a Western-style village that makes for a pleasant stop on the road. Founded in 1940 by a group of Hollywood investors - including actor Gene Autry - the community was imagined as a film set for Wild West movies: in all, it hosted over 50 productions between 1940 and 1950. There's little to do on site, other than explore Main Street, its small Cinema Museum, Art Studio and boutiques, and dine at Pappy & Harriet's. Plus: superb views of the surrounding mountains.
