JAGANNATH TEMPLE
Temple dedicated to Jagannath, part of the Char Dham and adorned with statues of deities in stone or metal, to be visited by Hindus
The Jagannath temple is part of the Char Dham, along with the Badrinath, Rameshwaram and Dwarka temples, the 4 sacred sites that every Hindu must visit at least once in a lifetime. Dating back to the 12th century, it is dedicated to Jagannath, a form of Vishnu. The statues of the deities that adorn the temple are made of stone or metal, except for Jagannath, who is carved from sacred wood. Non-Hindus are not allowed to enter the temple, but it can be viewed from the outside, notably from the roof of the adjacent library.
