Yazoo City was founded in 1824 as Hannan's Bluff. It was later renamed Manchester, then changed to Yazoo City in 1841. The city has been the county seat of the same name since 1849. After being decimated by yellow fever in 1853 and 1878, ravaged by fire in 1904, drowned beneath the waters of the 1927 flood, Yazoo City was partially destroyed in 2010 by three successive tornadoes, which also devastated a large part of the state. Today, Yazoo City has about 12 500 inhabitants. The city centre is pleasant and has several restaurants that make it an excellent place to stop lunch. Main Street South, whose facades of the houses and shops give the little town a festive air, is to be seen in all cases.Yazoo City has two museums: the Oakes African-American Cultural Center and the Sam Olden Yazoo Historical Society Museum.
