In the far north of the country, Petropavl is a predominantly Russian city, with one hand extended to Astana and the other to Moscow. The destinations served by the bus and railway stations are more regular with the Russian big brother than with Kazakh cities. Founded in the mid-18th century, Petropavl is a garrison town that has retained the checkerboard layout of Russian military outposts in Central Asia. Life is organized around the pedestrian street Konstitutsiya, lined with cafés and restaurants and very lively in the evening. Around it, Soviet-era building bars separate the centre from the old wooden houses that still brighten up the outlying districts. A pleasant stopover, if you are on your way to Russia, to take the temperature of a small town in the Kazakh province.
