ICE SHEET
Tours to Kangerlussuaq to explore the ice cap and admire the spectacular view of lakes with icebergs.
This is Kangerlussuaq's must-see attraction. The ice cap begins at the upper end of the valley to the east of the city and offers a spectacular view that should not be missed under any circumstances. The ice sheet can be reached at the end of a gravel road outside the city. The nearest glacier (about 20 km from the city) is called the Russel Glacier, it is active and advances 25 cm per year. The fairly flat road is suitable for walking and spending a little more time near the ice for 2-3 days, and perhaps continue further along the road to contemplate some of the surrounding lakes with small floating icebergs. Be prepared for colder temperatures near the ice, especially due to fresh air winds from the ice sheet. It is possible to go there by car, on foot and by bike. Tours are offered in Kangerlussuaq by Albatros with very competent and friendly guides.
Do not get too close to the 80-metre ice cliffs of the Russell Glacier from which large blocks of ice can detach violently. The temperature on the glacier can be 10°C lower than that of Kangerlussuaq. Provide clothing accordingly.
Day or multi-day expeditions on the ice cap are possible to organize, and even to spend a night there thanks to the camp set up on site by Albatros, namely igloo-like tents in which you slept in sleeping bags. An exceptional experience.
