Nicknamed the "Venice of Greenland" because of the small natural canals that run through it, the town was built as Sukkertoppen in 1755 on the site of Kangaamiut, and was moved to its present location in 1782. In the 19th century the town served as an important trading post for the reindeer hide trade. Its name literally means "the rugged place" in reference to the many rocky hills and small mountains that shape the shape of the city. Two Greenlandic personalities come from Maniitsoq: singer-actor Rasmus Lyberth and the designer of the Greenlandic flag Thue Christiansen. Kim Leine's famous novel The Prophets of Eternity Fjord (2012) is set primarily in Maniitsoq. The city now has a population of about 2,700
