GREENLANDICUM ARBORETUM
The municipality has the only arboretum in Greenland located not far from the airport, on the Mellemlandet Ridge. This "arctic" garden groups together a living collection of trees and bushes (no less than 110 species!) planted over some 15 hectares since its creation in 1954, including mainly conifers typical of the taiga such as Siberian larch (Larix sibirica), lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta), Scots pine (Pinus Sylvestris) and white spruce (Picea glauca). Other species from alpine and arctic environments from all over the northern hemisphere include: the subalpine fir from Canada, the pubescent birch from Finland, the Norway spruce, the aspen poplar from Iceland or the chokecherry from Sweden! Some of these trees have already produced cones, and offspring from these fruits have even been observed. This forest also serves as an experimental site for monitoring the consequences of global warming on certain species. According to a team of scientists, it is highly likely that by 2100 the area covered by trees and shrubs will be much larger than it is today in Greenland. It is highly recommended to go there for a few hours, a magical experience with the sound of the wind in the leaves... and a spectacular view of the glacier at the top! The walk continues towards a ruin and then a waterfall. In September, the colours turning to yellow and red become sumptuous.
