CHURCH OF SANTA MARIA DELS TURERS

The first documents about the church of Santa Maria dels Turers date back to the year 1017. The first church was built on the order of the abbot of Sant Esteve Monastery. Three centuries later, the bishop allowed the demolition, which became too small for the growing population of the city, and a new temple was erected and inaugurated in 1333. It would appear that its name comes from its location on a turo (hill), sitting at a higher altitude than that of the monastery, whose construction is before it. The Gothic church in the shape of the basilica consists of a central nave of origin 11 metres wide, covered by a heptagonale apse supported by large foothills. The two side naves were built between the th and th centuries. The façade overlooking the rue de l'Església was originally the main door: warhead and eardrum arches frames animal and plant motifs carved on impostes and capitals.
