EL PILAR

This vast site built on a natural elevation has yet to reveal all its secrets. Researchers, who continue their excavations every year during the dry season, have so far uncovered some 30 platforms, a dozen pyramids, a palace and a ball court - far more than at any other site in the San Ignacio area. The remains of a causeway leading across the border to Guatemala have also been uncovered, probably joining the Tikal site just 48 kilometers away.
