The capital of the division of the same name, Rangpur has barely 300 000 inhabitants. The town was conquered in 1575 by the army of Raja Man Singh, but it was only in 1686 that it was integrated into the Mughal empire. Formerly in the heart of Bengal, Rangpur is one of the oldest municipalities in the region, a title it won in 1869. It had a moderate development until the 1990 s, just like its region. With a quiet and simple character, it has a few buildings inherited from the colonial era, as well as rajbaris or less good conservation status, a heritage of local zamindars.
