The area was known to French missionaries in the early 17th century and to trappers in the early 19th century. It was not until 1844, however, that Marquette was developed following the discovery of rich iron ore deposits near nearby Teal Lake. This industry is still active and has made the town a major port on Lake Superior. Marquette is also a very pleasant place to stay with plenty of outdoor activities in all seasons. There are several craft breweries, cafes and nice shops as well. Not to be missed in the winter is the UP 200 dog sled race that runs between Marquette and Grand Marais.
