Maine Capitol with a newly redone bronze dome topped by a gold statue of wisdom
The dome of the Maine capitol has just been redone and shows its original colour: bronze. It is surmounted by a gilded statue in fine gold representing wisdom. She holds in her hand a pine wood torch and a pine cone, symbolizing the State of Maine. The foundation stone of this building was laid in 1829, two years after Augusta was granted the status of state capital. The construction was entrusted to the architect Charles Bulfinch, author of the Massachusetts capitol. The building was extensively remodelled in 1911 during expansion work.
