Augusta is the capital of Maine and has a population of about 18,500. The city was settled by the British from Plymouth in 1629. They established an important trading post where skins and furs were traded. In 1661, Indian uprisings in the area put an end to this prosperous trade and the town was abandoned for 75 years. In 1754, as settlers waged a merciless war against the Indians, Fort Western, the oldest wooden fort in America, was built. Today, Augusta's activity stems from its administrative role. In addition to the Capitol and the State Museum, the town is home to some beautiful 19th century houses.
