Founded in 1788 by the famous Jesuit Juan María Salvatierra, a colonizer of Baja California, it is worth visiting the church of San Francisco Javier, which has been rebuilt several times from the first and basic Jesuit missions. Accessible on foot or on horseback, its surroundings are dotted with abandoned mines and seasonal waterfalls; the scenery from the viewpoints over the canyon is superb. The village can also be an excellent base for visiting the village of Urique, located 40 kilometres away. For those who continue to El Fuerte or Los Mochis by train, it is from here that the most spectacular part of the journey awaits you.
