ABBAZIA DI SAN COLOMBANO
Abbey with 9th century baptismal font in Bobbio
The abbey was founded in 614 by the Irish missionary Saint Columban. In the Middle Ages, it boasted one of the richest manuscript libraries of its time. The current complex dates back to 1456-1522. The Renaissance basilica houses a 9th-century baptismal font. The 15th-century crypt houses the tomb of Saint Columban. It is paved with a 12th-century mosaic depicting the story of the Maccabees and the cycle of the seasons. The abbey inspired the one described by Umberto Eco in The Name of the Rose. A religious museum is located here.
