ETH? Understand Elephant Transit Home. Created in 1995, this elephant transit home is managed by the Department of Wildlife Conservatory of Sri Lanka. To Uda Walawe, we met Dr. Vijitha, a veterinarian on site since the first steps of the project. Today, welcoming 49 elephants from 3 months to 6 years, the structure works actively for the reintegration of these animals into wildlife. Injured, orphaned or abducted, individuals are collected, cared for, fed as long as they are not autonomous and then released into the surrounding national parks, on average at the age of 5 to 6.
