This museum is housed in the estate founded by one of the members of the wealthy Vanderbilt family, William Kissam Vanderbilt. Upon his death, he bequeathed his residence, which he had built between 1910 and 1936, to Suffolk County on condition that it be transformed into a museum. Today, the site houses a small museum dedicated to Vanderbilt's life and art collections (much of the furniture inside the house is period), a museum on marine history, a collection on ethnography, gardens and a planetarium, which was completely renovated in 2013. It is possible to take a guided tour of the house.
