Milan is a town of 3,000 people in the western suburbs of Grants. Prior to the uranium mining boom of the 1950s, it was a small cluster of businesses related to the needs of Route 66 travelers. However, with the mining success, the town was incorporated in 1957 and named after Salvador Milan, who was a major landowner in the area and was the town's first mayor. The private Cibola County Correctional Center, operated by CoreCivic (formerly Corrections Corporation of America), houses over 1,000 inmates. Today, it is one of the city's major employers.
