M'Sila, located in the Highlands, is an important stop on the road to the South. If the city is not of great interest, about 30 km northeast is one of the most important archaeological sites of the country. At an altitude of 1,000 m, the Kalaa of Beni Hammad, a Unesco World Heritage Site, is revealed. Built on a strategic site in 1007 by Hammad ibn Bologhine, the son of the founder of the city of Algiers, Bologhine ibn Ziri, the Kala (fortress) is the first Hammadite capital. The ruins of this city, which symbolized the golden age of the Hammadite Empire, represent an authentic model of a fortified Muslim city.
