On a plateau at an altitude of 1,300 m, at the crossroads of the Algiers-Constantine and Béjaïa-Biskra roads, Sétif (about 650,000 inhabitants) is a commercially dynamic city, including a brand-new, very modern shopping mall that opened in 2016 right in the city center. After long work, the tramway finally opened in the city center in 2018. This has relieved congestion on the streets and the city has become more livable, with much less traffic and a largely pedestrianized center.History. The ancient Esedif ("black") was a Roman colony around the 1st century AD and then capital of Mauretania Sitifensis in the 3rd century. The city was transformed into a military garrison by the French who lined most of the streets in the center in the 1840s. In 1945, the city experienced a real tragedy with the massacre that took place there: 45,000 Algerians were killed during bloody repressions of anti-colonialist demonstrations. Commemorated every year in Algeria, the massacre of Setif will serve as a reference to the insurrection of 1954 that will lead to the Algerian War.
