PARQUE ARQUEOLÓGICO CIHUATÁN
The ruins of Cihuatán («place of the woman» in náhuatl) are a vast ceremonial centre over 300 hectares and constitute one of the country's major archaeological sites. Among other remains, there is a 14-metre main pyramid, called La Gloria, two pelota playgrounds of 60 m long (El Teocali and Ku), as well as other civic and religious buildings.
A small museum can appreciate the history of this fascinating place surrounded by rivers and near the volcano of Guazapa. Abandoned due to wars and conflicts caused by the fall and abandonment of Tula, the town of Cihuatán was burned around 1050 or 1100 BC to never be rebuilt.
Today, excavations continue through a project of the FUNDAR association. Since 2000, excavations have helped to update an acropolis, a circular temple and new pyramids.
