A 33 km from San Salvador, Aguilares is known as a former Mayan ceremonial and administrative centre, as evidenced by the ruins of Cihuatán dating back to 1 200 before Jesus Christ. Around 630 of our era, nahuas and pipils contingents, founders of Cuscatlán (now San Salvador), drove people under the domination of lempiras.On the occasion of the Bicentenary of the First Cry of independence, the city was named Ciudad Bicentenario (Town of the Bicentennial) in April 2011 by the Culture secretariat of El Salvador.The employers'holidays of Aguilares are célèbrées from 6 January to 15 January in honour of deSeñor of las Misericordias (Lord of Mercy).
