FORTALEZA SÃO FERNANDO
Fortaleza São Fernando, home to the Angolan Navy's Namibe naval base since independence.
Nestled atop the Ponta Negra hill, the São Fernando fortress was built overlooking the bay (1840-1844) to consolidate the Portuguese military presence in this southern region of the country, shortly before the arrival of the first settlers. It was named after Fernando II of Portugal (1816-1885). It was here, on November1, 1849, that the first mass was celebrated in the town of Moçâmedes. Since independence, the building has housed the command of the Angolan Navy's Namibe naval base.
