KALANDULA FALLS
Horseshoe-shaped waterfalls with beautiful views, popular with weekend and public holiday outings and picnics.
Called Quedas do Duque du Bragança in colonial times , these falls on the Lucala River, the largest tributary of the Rio Kwanza, are the second highest in Africa, at over 100 m high. Shaped like a horseshoe, they are also impressive for their width of over 400 m (550 m in the rainy season). The scenery is spectacular!
The size of the cloud of water overhanging the site varies, of course, depending on the season and the flow of the Lucala River upstream from the cataract. This permanent fog is sometimes accompanied by a beautiful rainbow.
The main access is from the right bank, a few kilometers from the municipality of Kalandula. Everything is perfectly signposted. A concrete viewpoint welcomes visitors in complete safety. The more adventurous can get close to the river's edge at the waterfall, walking over large, sometimes slippery rocks. Some tourists have not been careful enough... Beware! The more courageous can also descend to the lower reaches of the river via a steep path. Young people from neighboring villages offer their services as guides for this excursion. Prices have not yet been regulated. This is a popular spot for weekend outings and picnics with friends and family.
Access from the left bank is longer and less easy, though suitable for all vehicles. The view of the falls from the Pousada Calandula is equally impressive. Visitors are more exposed to the cloud of water spray.
