VIEWPOINT DA LUA
The Lua lookout, discovered in Angola, is part of Luanda's imagination and offers a breathtaking lunar landscape.
On the road to Kissama Park from Luanda, Miradouro da Lua, which literally means "Moon Lookout", is part of the Luandan imagination. Families, couples and friends stop here along the way to admire this fantastic landscape, straight out of another world, with the ocean as a backdrop. A series of colorful cliffs, severely eroded by rain and wind, form a balcony overlooking the Atlantic. Canyons, ravines, sharp peaks and their spectacular relief turn from chalky white to deep red, passing through ochre tones, whose hues are accentuated at sunset. These sedimentary deposits, composed of clay, sandstone and silt, have accumulated over millions of years and today form different geological layers of varying ages. The red and ochre colors indicate the presence of iron oxides in the composition, while the white comes from limestone. In fact, if you know anything about geology, you can read this landscape sculpted over time like an open book. In 1993, at the height of the civil war, this breathtaking location was the setting for Portuguese director Jorge António's first Luso-Angolan film co-production, O Miradouro da Lua. Since then, this protected natural site has been reforested and landscaped to enable visitors to enjoy the panorama in complete safety. There's even a central bar serving a variety of drinks and snacks overlooking the lunar scenery. A must-see stop!
