FORTALEZA DE SÃO MIGUEL
A polygonal fortress, entirely preserved in Angola, housing the Museu Nacional de História Militar.
It was the first defensive fortification built in Angola under the orders of the first governor of Angola, Paulo Dias de Novais. The polygonal fortress was built at the end of the 16th century on Mount São Paulo, now renamed Mount of the Fortress - Morro da Fortaleza - and overlooks the bay and island of Luanda. The fully preserved São Miguel fortress now houses the Museu Nacional de História Militar, which exhibits weapons and artefacts linked to the wars of independence and civil war. One of the rooms is decorated with superb azulejos.
