IGREJA NOSSA SENHORA DE NAZARETH

Facing the bay, this ^17th-century church was built at the request of the governor of Angola, André Vital de Negreiros, who wished to thank God for having survived a shipwreck during a voyage. It is adorned with superb azulejos depicting various scenes from life, including the battle of Ambuíla, where Kongo king Antoine^1er was beheaded. His head is said to have been buried in the church. Facing the choir, note the sculpture of the Black Saint, Iphigenia, who protects against fire.
