Renaissance-style art museum on the Bowdoin College campus housing more than 20,000 works that trace three thousand years of history.
The art museum is located on the Bowdoin College campus. The museum building was constructed in 1894. It was the first museum in Maine at the time. In Greek Renaissance style, in reference to the creation of a Democratic America, it contains more than 20,000 works that trace 3,000 years of history. Colonial and Federal periods, as well as American art, are well represented. Notably, the first edition of Harriet Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin will be on view.
