TENNESSEE WILLIAMS HOME & WELCOME CENTER
Tennessee William (1911-1983), of his true name Thomas Lanier Williams, is the famous author of parts such as A tramway named Desire (Streetcar Named Desire - 1947 - Pullitzer Prize 1948), Pussy on a hot roof (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof - 1955) or La Glass De (The Glass Menagerie - 1944). He was born in Columbus and spent his first three years in this old Victorian house with his mother and sister. His father, a trade representative, came from a prestigious family in Tennessee, two of whom were the first governor and senator of the state.
This house was then the rectory of the nearby St Paul Church where his grandfather, Reverend Walker Dakin, was a pastor. It was in 1993 that it was decided to move the house to the current place to allow an extension of the church. Today it is a visiting place with memories of the author and the Welcome center of the city.
