Greenville, the headquarters of Washington County, is approximately 34 000 inhabitants. It lies west of Leland and Highway 61, near the banks of Mississippi and Ferguson Lake, which mark the border with Arkansas. Founded in 1824 by William W. Blanton, Greenville is named after Nathanael Greene (1742-1786), General of the Continental Army during the United States War of Independence. After being hit along with many other cities around the civil war, Greenville was hit hard by a great fire in 1874 and then by an outbreak of yellow fever in 1878. Yet it is the floods of 1927 that dévastèrent the region with the most traces of traces. A small museum on this disaster, held by volunteers, is also visiting.Greenville lived for the most important Jewish community in Mississippi. Despite a significant decline in the number of inhabitants of the city over the past few decades, this Jewish community still occupies an important place in the local and economic life of the city, as in its history.Today, the digue (levee in English), which had ceded to Ferguson Lake in 1927, was built and built in place of recreation and recreation, the Waterfront. There are numerous facilities, but also one of the two casinos of the city. The second is located in the south, near the bridge over the river. The city centre has a few historic buildings that deserve a glance, such as Washington County Courthouse (1890), First National Bank (1903) or the Hebrew Union Temple (1906). Several restaurants are able to satisfy the most demanding appetites while the hotel offer is quite well furnished due to the games and the river that attracts many visitors.Every year, on the first weekend of October, the Mighty Mississippi Music Festival brings together several thousand people in the Warfield Point Park. Outside this festival, do not hesitate to visit this park to admire Mississippi from the observation tower. The view is great.
