Petit Futé's opinion on RESERVA BIOLÓGICA BOSQUE NUBOSO MONTEVERDE

To visit this reserve, the card you will be given at the entrance is very useful. Ask the guardian, depending on the time you have and your physical condition, which trail is the most appropriate. You can walk from 1h to a day in the reserve. We particularly recommend crossing the suspension bridge and the viewpoint overlooking a beautiful part of the forest. You will often have your head in the clouds so it is not sure that you will be able to enjoy the panorama around you. Only 250 visitors maximum are allowed on the trails (and not by the day), which often arrive at the same time, between 8am and 10am, even if it is not possible to book your place in advance, but you can book a guided tour. Between May and December (the wet season, there are fewer people but more rain, and it can be quite cold). Due to the humidity, bring clothes to change after the visit, or at least a raincoat, sweater and socks. It is not for nothing that this tropical forest is called "humid".... During your visit to the reserve, you may have the opportunity to see all kinds of animals such as the quetzal (especially visible from March to April), the emblem of the region, which does not tolerate captivity. This bird nests in the tallest and oldest trees in the high tropical forests. The quetzal couple is a perfect example of task sharing within the family, with the female brooding at night and the male (with a green tail) taking over during the day. The solitary, with a black head, has an attractive song comparable to that of the nightingale, which can be heard around the Barva volcano. To observe these birds properly, it is better to be accompanied by a guide whose eye and ear more experienced than yours will be able to capture the furtive quivering in the branches or in the abundant ferns. You will also observe, rather at nightfall, strange frogs, and if you hear about the golden toad, don't despair if you don't see it: it's been so long since we've seen any that some people claim the species is extinct - or that it may never have existed....
