The coffee experience was truly amazing. If you're a coffee nerd you need to do it as soon as possible.

One of my best ever hiking experiences. I went early in the morning and was alone on the trail, making it easier to see all kinds of birds (keelbilled toucan), blue Morpho butterflies casually crossing the trail, amazing fig trees and views. Seems like a sincerely well-loved family run place. I couldn't believe I could walk to such a gem of a spot.

What a wonderfully serene place to spend a day or three.

I found the sanctuary via a last minute AirBNB booking, and thoroughly enjoyed my two night stay, as well as taking the guided natural history tour with Marvin. Hiking boots are strongly recommended, these are mountain trails, not paved sidewalks, but that should be common sense.

Familia Salazar was very welcoming, and managed to make this very shy solo tourist feel right at home.

Nice little reserve that you can spend between 1 hour and 4 hours hiking around, as there are different trails to explore. We managed to spot Coati's, a false coral snake, plenty of interesting bugs and a few birds. I've voted it down a few stars because of 2 reasons. Firstly, the recent reviews on here that said they were charged 20USD per person, yet we were charged 49USD for 2 adults. They either made the price up or they've increased their prices quite a lot, which was disappointing. For 49USD we felt it wasn't worth it when it only costs 18USD per person at the Nature Reserve next door. It was no way as expensive as this when we visited a few years ago, which brings me to the 2nd reason I voted it down. Back then they had a viewing platform that you could walk on to at the Gulf of Nicoya View Point, which now seems to have crumbled away and not been rebuilt, so that was unfortunately another disappointment.

This was a beautiful place that we enjoyed so very much. It's a must see! We also participated in a cooking class making the classic Costa Rican chicken and rice dish. Along with a salad with a delicious homemade dressing dessert was empanadas which we also made. It was a wonderful activity and one that was just a bit different than everything else we did. Highly recommended!

My husband and I stay in Monteverde for the winter months and visit this family run sanctuary often. There are multiple trails, lovely Lookouts and also a beautiful garden. We have seen lots of birds here including the long tail mannequin. We love the ecological sanctuary!

We had a lot of fun making arroz con pollo with Chris. We started with a tour of his amazing organic farm where we harvested ingredients. We then cooked outside on the covered patio, which was lovely. I highly recommend this activity - great for both experienced and non cooks!

We also did the night walk and walked the trails. The trails were in excellent condition and we saw tarantulas, different frogs, coati, an owl, glowing beetles and other interesting birds.

We decided to visit the sanctuary at the last minute, they replied to the email very quickly. We couldn't take any tour. We just walked in 3 trails and saw a couple of interesting plants, ficus trees, a tree arch, and turkey tail fungus on a tree.

We walked through coffee & banana plantations. The water drop was like our private place.

We saw coatis, beautiful birds, & butterflies. The viewpoint was great, it was so nice to sit there & watch the clouds covering the opposite mountain & the reappearance.

The guy at the reception, Andres was friendly and explained about the trails & wildlife there. Since we didn't have time to take a cooking class, I requested the Gallo pinto recipe while reserving & he sent it to my email before we even visited the sanctuary. I tried, and it turned out very good. Thank you!

Overpriced hike in a dry forest. It is okayish - but you'll probably see more animals around your lodge. The trails are short and there is not much to see yet it costs as much as a Curi Cancha or Auguti Reserve - these alternatives are far superior. In my opinion asking 20 bucks per person for a short hike is way way too much. Simply put there is not much to see and the trail system is too simplistic, basically a single loop. It is an ok hike, just way too expensive for what you get

My husband and I did the coffee tour at Sanctuario Ecológico and had the most incredible afternoon. Chris is so knowledgeable and passionate. We learned of the history, some science/chemistry, and sustainable practices. We practiced making some of our own, learning how tiny adjustments completely alter the flavors and aromas. Highly recommend supporting this family owned coffee farm. In addition, we saw a pack of 20 or so coatis and two capuchins. Really amazing and memorable afternoon. Thank you so much, Chris!

We spent an afternoon doing the coffee tour with Chris and it was one of the best tour experiences so far on our travel trip.
The amount of information and knowledge that Chris has on coffee is so impressive and he really gets you enthused and passionate about it. He talks you through the history, the chemistry of getting the growing conditions perfect, shows you his experimental lab, the outdoor coffee plantations and then gives you the most incredible coffee making experience which includes tasting as well as making your own coffee.
Who knew there were so many factors involved in getting the perfect cup!
Would highly recommend if you're looking for a unique and in depth coffee experience from a small family run business.

We had an amazing coffee tour. Chris is a real coffee addict! He is growing different species and experimenting. His knowledge is huge. After a 45 minute across the farm and gardens, we spend 90 minutes on a very deep coffee workshop where we had the chance to smell and taste different coffees from across the world and locally grown. We learned a lot about the different parameters of what makes a good coffee also by experimenting with different modes of making it, different times, water temperatures, different shapes of glasses and so on…

It was just an amazing and funny time! We can recommend it so much more than any commercial coffee tour on a big farm.

100% worth it. Took almost 3 hours very slow walking. Lots to see, even more to hear. Probably worth a guided tour as spotting birds is tough.

Wat een leuke plek. Kleinschalig en ook heel rustig. Mooie wandeling gemaakt en best wat dieren kunnen spotten. Aanrader!
