KIAMA BLOWHOLE
This well-known marine geyser in Kiama was discovered by British explorer George Bass (1771-1803).
Kiama Blowhole, the Kiama sea geyser, is well known in the region. It is located near the lighthouse on the eastern tip of the harbor. It was British explorer George Bass (1771-1803) who discovered this phenomenon on December 6, 1797, while exploring the strait that now bears his name. The force of the geyser shoots water to heights approaching 25 metres: a truly impressive sight! For a poetic anecdote, the name Kiama means "the place where the sea makes a noise" in Aboriginal language. A visit at high tide is even more spectacular!
