ST. LEONARD'S CHURCH
The real wonder of the city. This church is partly Romanesque, partly Gothic, because it was built between the th and th centuries. Wait for a surprise while entering inside. You will discover a museum, a museum of religious art, because Saint-Léonard has escaped by miracle what it is agreed to call the "fury of the iconoclastic" of the th century. Hung at an ark of the nave, a marianum, sort of huge layered pendant to the two vierges vierges surrounded by the flames of eternal glory, and trampling at the feet a unhappy dragon, greet you. Angels in dress cling to the crown of oval flowers identifying the Virgin. A cornerstone of the decoration, the tower of the Holy Sacrament, executed by Cornelis de Vriendt, is a gift from a very rich local family. This masterpiece of the 18 th century sculpture in white stone of Avesne is 200 m high and has realistic characters spread over nine floors. Donors are buried in close proximity.
