For those who, by chance or by choice, find themselves in the vicinity of Senbete (50 km north of Debre Birhan) on a Sunday, a detour to the market is a must. Oromo and Amhara meet there to sell their vegetables, cereals and livestock. These local populations are joined by the Afar, who have come from the desert plains of the Danakil to barter their salt, carried by camel, for a few subsistence products and everyday utensils. We recommend setting off from Addis Ababa early on Sunday morning to reach Sembete during its market, then on Monday to visit the Bati market on the way to Lalibela.
