Even further north, Kemise is a small town of almost 20,000 inhabitants, in the center of a rural region. This is where the Thursday market is held, bringing together the people of the region in the shadow of the minarets of the large mosque, a reminder that this is Muslim Oromo territory (75% of the population, compared with 25% of orthodox Christian Oromo). The men wear cherot, the typical loincloth worn by Ethiopia's Islamic ethnic groups, notably the Somali and Afar. Few tourists venture as far as this village, which offers a complete change of scenery and a very different market from Sembete or Bati.
