Vanua Balavu is a small island with a population of barely 1,000. Tongan culture dominates here, as it does in Lakeba, and there are about 400 Tongans. In 1874, Ma'afu, a Tongan warlord, landed in the Lau Islands to invade Fiji. He established his base camp at Lomaloma, where a monument in his honor can still be seen today. It is probably one of the islands that best gives the impression of being at the end of the world, of authenticity and peace. It is certainly what attracts the lucky few, on board their own boat, who enjoy a splendid lagoon where the volcanic relief is of great beauty.
