About ten kilometres after passing the crossroads of the Unity road, we reach a small desert of silty clay, the Petit Bara. It is crossed lengthwise by a track that joins the place called Ouadjalé, at the foot of Mount Hemed. The N1 road then crosses a slight basaltic relief before reaching the Grand Bara, a more imposing cousin of the previous one. This vast white expanse, parched and cracked, is known to all sand yacht enthusiasts. Unfortunately, today it has become complicated to organize a session. Different projects are being studied to relaunch the activity. To be continued. On the other hand, every year, the French forces stationed in Djibouti (FFDj) organize the Grand Bara cross-country race, a 15 km long marathon in the desert. This sporting event brings together more than 1,500 runners of all nationalities, both civilians and soldiers, men and women. The Grand Bara, a flat sandy area, 30 km long and 10 km wide, whose end cannot be seen from the road, is particularly known for its mirages and small whirlpools of burning sand. The latter follow such unexpected and changing trajectories that one could imagine them to be sentient. From Grand Bara, one can go west to the Gaggade plain following a difficult but correct track
